Description

The Dark Yeller JFET mic-pre Opamp was designed specifically as a direct replacement for the SSM2017 preamp IC used in the AMEK Big studio console, but will work in any circuit that uses the SSM2017, SSM2019, THAT 1510, or INA217 integrated circuits. This is the Op-Amp used in the Dark Storm and Super Storm preamps. The tone is big and warm, yet still detailed. It can get a bit crunchy when pushed. The sterile accurate sound of chips like the THAT 1510 are not found with Dark Yeller Opamps. Plenty of clarity can be found at lower gain settings with Dark Yeller's, but where they differ from chip opamps is the color and grit that you can get in the higher gain settings. It's a warm sound too because Dark Yeller's utilize JFET transistors, which tend to have an almost tube-like sound.

The LBA Dark Yeller preamp module is a JFET mic preamp, which was designed to fit perfectly into the Big 1 channel strips of the Langley "Big" series of analog consoles made by AMEK in the early 1990's.  It has since become the Op-Amp at the heart of the LBA Dark Storm and Super Storm preamplifiers.  Dark Yeller offers a level of clarity and warmth to your recordings that surpasses the stock SSM2017 preamp IC chips found on many consoles from the 1990's.  The Dark Yeller preamp module is a direct replacement for the following chips: SSM2017, SSM2019, INA217, THAT 1510.  The Dark Yeller module can offer up to 10dB more gain than those aforementioned chips and has a sound all its own.  There are some very nice modern IC preamps out there if clinical accuracy is your goal.  Dark Yeller's are not clinically accurate.  Instead, they offer a bit of warm color and some real grit at higher gain settings.  The backside of the Dark Yeller has 8 pins for socketing into the PDIP socket commonly found on many 1990's mixing consoles.  It can also be directly soldered to a PCB, as done in the LBA Dark Storm and Super Storm microphone preamplifiers.
